He preached in Samaria, baptized Simon the Magician, explained the faith to the Eunuch, minister of Queen Candace of Ethiopia, and baptized him. Theophane the Hymnographer (778-845) was a brother of Theodore the Confessor whose feast is celebrated on December 27. Both were born in Karak of Transjordania. Highly educated in science, both human and divine, they entered the monastic life in 800 in the monastery of St. Sabas where they were ordained to the priesthood. They moved to Constantinople in 813. Under the iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Armenian, they were jailed for their Orthodox faith in a prison on the Bosphorus. Released by order of Emperor Michael the Stutterer, they were thrown back into prison for a long time by the wicked Emperor Theophilus, sent into exile in 834, then called back to the capital where they were beaten mercilessly and branded on the forehead. Theodore died in Apamea of Bithynia in 844; Theophane went on to be Metropolitan of Nicea under the pious Emperor Michael and his wife Theodora. He died in 845. Michael the Theophilus Stutterer, they were thrown back into prison for a long time by the wicked Emperor.
